FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1.) When should a child have his/her first dental appointment?

Ans: A child should visit the dentist for the first time no later than their third birthday.

2.) What are sealants?

Ans: When back teeth are developing, pits and fissures form in the chewing surfaces of the enamel. They are impossible to keep clean because the bristles of a toothbrush cannot reach them. A sealant is a plastic material that is applied to the chewing surface and fills up and seals these pits and fissures giving the patient a smooth surface which is easier to keep clean.

3.) I have noticed a small blister on my gums and I am getting a bad taste in my mouth. What is the cause of this?

Ans: The blister (or fistula) works somewhat like a release valve for infection that is present at the tip of the root. The bad taste comes from the infection that is draining. The cause is an abscess and you should be seen by your dentist right away.

4.) Can drinking soda give me cavities?

Ans: Yes! Sip all day, get decay! The acids and sugar in soda attack and weaken the enamel on your teeth. Most sodas contain ten to twelve teaspoons of sugar. Try to make soft drinks an occasional treat.

5.) My gums bleed when I brush and floss, should I stop brushing to let them heal?

Ans: Your gums are bleeding because they are unhealthy. When the gum tissue is inflamed the tissue bleeds as a way to rid itself of bacteria and plaque. Continue brushing and flossing gently but thoroughly and make an appointment with the hygienist for a cleaning as soon as possible.
